Without the extension in force, you would have had to pay extra again from July to make calls and surf in other EU countries.
The abolition of roaming charges in the EU will be extended until 2032. The Member States decided to suspend additional costs for telephone or Internet use abroad in the EU for another ten years, as the Council announced on Monday in Brussels.
Initially, the abolition of roaming charges was valid until June. Even after June, EU citizens would now be able to “make calls, send SMS and surf the Internet without additional costs,” the Council of the EU said.
However, the rules on “reasonable use” will be retained. These are intended to prevent it from being permanently possible to make phone calls or surf the Internet in other EU states without extra costs.
In December, EU member states and negotiators from the European Parliament agreed on the longer suspension of roaming charges. The formal agreement of both sides was still missing. The EU Parliament had given this at the end of March.
Roaming charges are levied for the use of foreign mobile networks. Mobile calls within the EU and in Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, were initially capped in 2007 and then gradually reduced. They were then completely abolished as of June 15, 2017.
